PADDLING WIEPRZA DOWN TO THE BALTIC SEA

Location:

Wieprza originates in the small Białe Lake nearby Głodowo village in the Bytów Lakeland. It flows through the Polanowska Upland and Słupska Plain. It empties into the Baltic Sea in Darłówko. The river is one of the most beautiful trails of the Pomerania region. Little frequented by tourists, thus very virginal.

Wieprza statistics:

Length of the river: 130 km (80 mi)
Length of the trail: 95 (59) or 115 km (71 mi)
Estimated time of canoe trip: 5-6 days

Skill Level:

The trail is quite difficult, it is good to be guided by an experienced leader. The portages that happen by the power stations, water mills and fallen trees are the main inconveniences of the trail.

Camping conditions:

Wieprza belongs to the group of rivers with the underdeveloped tourist infrastructure.  Except for the one parking place in the Broczyna there are no organized camping places. The majority of camping places have non-organized status, which is an unquestionable attraction of the river. Although, Wieprza passes Sławno, the town is inhospitable for canoeists.

Description of the trail:

Wieprza is one of the most beautiful Pomeranian rivers – wild, picturesquely situated, with numerous riffles, alloes to embark on the wonderful canoeing adventure in the open outdoors. You won’t find the organized campsites and wonderful camping places here, but the community with the nature, animals approaching the river banks, wild camping places, silence and calmness and small number of organized canoe trips make perfect conditions for relaxation. The culmination of the Wieprza’s hardships is the possibility to paddle straight into  the beach in Darłówko – paddling beyond the port’s tips gives you the new and wonderful experiences!!
We recommend two places, where the canoe trip may start. The first one is in Trzebielino town, where you can float the kayaks by the right – hand Wieprza’s tributary - Pokrzywna river, at the road bridge on the Trzebielino – Poborowo route. This section extends the trip by one day (18 km) (11 mi). Pokrzywna flows quite rapidly, so you don’t need to paddle too much; you may drift and enjoy the beauty of surrounding nature.
Pokrzywna empties into Wieprza at the small meadow. We proceed through the Wieprza for about 5 km (3 mi) and stay for the first stopover in the Broczyna. In Broczyna, near the road bridge, the second place, from which we may start our Wieprza adventure is located – The Monk Parking. The river’s estuary is 93 km (58 mi) and 4 days away.
Originally, the river passes through the beautiful deciduous forests, enrapturing us further with the view of pines and spruces growing out of carpets of heather and berries.
Our carefree journey is interrupted by the first portage in the small village – Biesowice, where we have to pass around the hydroelectric power station on foot . 3 km further we reach the second portage in the Kępka village – another power station to be passed around.
The next 3 km leads us to the Kępice town, where we face the 500 m long portage – another power station on our way – pulling of the packed kayaks is very bothersome, so it’s better to use the transport organized by the autochthons. Here we may look for the place to stay for the night. During another day we reach Sławno – it’s better to organize the accommodation for the night outside of the town.
Wieprza encircles Sławno from the right side, although the mill channel flows into the centre, passing the beautifully managed park. The channel joins the river’s mainstream outside of town, both arms are floatable, however, if you choose the channel you should mind the river bar by the old mill, the kayaks should be empty while floating.
The most beautiful part of the trp starts nearby the Tyn town. Wieprza flows with bends here, becomes narrower and quickens its pace. The river bifurcates in Darłowo. We should choose the right river’s arm and at this point we can end our trip by the main draft or proceed towards the sea.
After the portage  to the port channel, you should call the harbour administration and gain the allowance to canoe into the port and further into to the sea - beyond the port’s tips you can head  left or right and finish the trip on the beaches of Darłówko.
